Reversing diabetes means making tough choices in foods, nutrition and exercise

In this third and final part, we're exploring the causes of adult-onset diabetes and how people can both prevent and even reverse diabetes by applying fundamental knowledge of how the human body deals with dietary sugars and refined carbohydrates.read more…

Butter vs. margarine: Which is better for my heart?

Margarine usually tops butter when it comes to heart health. Margarine is made from vegetable oils, so it contains no cholesterol. Margarine is also higher in "good" fats - polyunsaturated and monounsaturated - than butter is. These types of fat help reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or "bad," cholesterol, when substituted for saturated fat. Butter, on the other hand, is made from animal fat, so it contains cholesterol and high levels of saturated fat.read more…

Diabetes Menu Planning: What Do I Eat?

A registered dietitian, preferably one who is also a certified diabetes educator (or CDE) and/or is experienced in diabetes care, is an essential resource for learning more about individualized menu planning and food choices with diabetes.

While food is a factor in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes management, the rationale behind dietary adjustments in each is different. Those with type 1 diabetes base their insulin dosage in part on what they eat. Those with type 2 diabetes often use their dietary choices as a method (for some, the primary method) of controlling their blood glucose levels.read more…

Low Fats, or Low Carbs?

While politics, religion and sports each create their fair share of bloody rivalries, nothing beats the level of animus generated by differing dietary philosophies. A case in point would be physicians espousing low fat diets vs. those advocating low carbohydrate diets. The low fat diets, promoted most publicly by Dean Ornish and Nathan Pritikin, stress fat-avoidance and the ingestion of high carbohydrate meals. The low carbohydrate diets, pushed most prominently by the recently deceased Robert Atkins (who died, we are assured, of non-cardiac causes,) stress a radical avoidance of carbohydrates in favor of fat and protein.read more…

Diabetes: Food Management

Understanding how the food your child eats affects blood sugar is an important part of managing diabetes. Your diabetes care provider will help you make a meal plan that works for you. How can people with diabetes use the food label to help with their diets?

They can begin with the Nutrition Facts panel, usually on the side or back of the package. A column headed % Daily Values shows whether a food is high or low in many of the nutrients listed. People with diabetes should check the % Daily Values for fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol. As a rule of thumb, if the number is 5 or less, the food may be considered low in that nutrient. The goal for most people with diabetes is to pick foods that have low % Daily Values for fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol and high % Daily Values for fiber. Other label nutrition information can help people with diabetes see if and how a food fits into their meal plan.read more…
